Last week Mount Sinai welcomed 116 high-achieving rising high school students to launch the Mount Sinai Health System High School Nursing Pathway Program—a six-week immersive experience designed to inspire the next generation of nurses and deepen their understanding of cultural awareness as a cornerstone of compassionate, equitable health care. Through hands-on learning, mentorship, and career exploration, students will prepare to become skilled, culturally competent health care professionals ready to serve the diverse communities of New York City.
Hosted jointly by the Mount Sinai Health System Department of Nursing and the Office for Health Data, Outcomes, and Engagement Strategy (HealthDOES), Mount Sinai partners with the New York City Department of Education and 1199 SEIU to provide students with firsthand experiences across the Health System. This year, Mount Sinai welcomed nine students who are children of 1199SEIU members employed within the Mount Sinai Health System.

Students will work alongside nurse managers and clinical teams while exploring a wide range of nursing specialties, leadership opportunities, and the important role nurses play in advancing equitable, patient-centered care.
This welcome ceremony marked the official start of the program and brought together Mount Sinai leaders, nursing staff, faculty, students, and family members to celebrate the beginning of this important journey. Students heard words of encouragement from Health System leaders, who emphasized the importance of compassion, curiosity, equity and lifelong learning in nursing.
The celebration continued with an interactive reception in the West Lobby organized in collaboration with Mount Sinai Nursing Education, where nursing units from across the Health System showcased their specialty areas and connected directly with students. During the tabling event, students had the opportunity to connect directly with nurses learning about a wide range of nursing specialties, including Cardiac, Oncology, Pediatrics, Informatics, Intensive Care, Medical-Surgical, Operating Room, Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), and Ambulatory Care. Students were offered a first-hand look at the many career pathways available within nursing and the vital role each specialty plays in delivering exceptional, patient-centered, equitable care.

Over the next six weeks, students will rotate across a variety of clinical settings, participate in educational programming, and receive mentorship from nurse managers. By engaging in hands-on learning, professional development, and career exploration, students will gain the knowledge and confidence to pursue careers in nursing while strengthening Mount Sinai’s commitment to building a workforce that reflects the diverse communities we serve.
