Thyroid Nodules and Genetic Testing

Thyroid nodules are exceedingly common, especially in women. By age 50, up to 70 percent of women have one or more thyroid nodules, but the vast majority of these are noncancerous. In fact, of all thyroid nodules, up to 95 percent are ultimately characterized as benign.

However, largely because of the increased use of radiologic imaging, the incidence of thyroid nodules – and the incidence of thyroid cancer – is increasing. Though this statistic may seem alarming, thyroid cancer is by far one of the most curable cancers. (more…)

Is a Vegetarian Diet During Pregnancy Healthy?

During pregnancy, a woman is encouraged to follow a healthy lifestyle, including making dietary changes as needed. Women who are vegetarian may become confused about whether continuing their vegetarian diet is actually healthy. Many such women will hear from friends, family, and health care professionals that being vegetarian is “unsafe” for both mother and baby. This can leave them feeling seriously conflicted. For long-time vegetarians, it can be especially disheartening when being vegetarian is not simply a diet, but a lifestyle. (more…)

Hepatitis C: Promising Treatment Developments

Over the past few years, enormous strides have been made in treatment options for people living with hepatitis C, a form of viral hepatitis that causes chronic liver disease. Treatments in the past were difficult to tolerate, produced numerous side effects, and for a large percentage of patients, were often unsuccessful. Promising new drugs, however, will likely reduce the burden of treatment (the work patients do to care for themselves, such as visiting the doctor or going for medical tests), produce quicker results, and cause fewer and less profound side effects. Better Imaging Detects Breast Cancer Early

Winning the battle against breast cancer is becoming a reality for women of all ages, thanks to diagnostic technology that can frequently detect breast cancer in its earliest stages. “Digital mammography acquires images electronically, resulting in better contrast, so we can often pick up smaller abnormalities before they become cancerous,” says Tamara A.
