The Mount Sinai Hospital officially opened its 20,700-square-foot Lauder Family Cardiovascular Ambulatory Center with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and reception on Wednesday, May 6, before an audience of jubilant supporters. The expansive Center, which will allow Mount Sinai physicians to treat nearly 300 heart and vascular outpatients a day, was established with generous support from Ronald S. Lauder and Leonard A. Lauder and their families in honor of Valentin Fuster, MD, PhD, the Director of Mount Sinai Heart and Physician-in-Chief of The Mount Sinai Hospital. (more…)

The Mount Sinai Health System invited staff, their friends and families, and the public, to learn about skin cancer prevention and receive a free, total-body skin examination during National Skin Cancer Awareness Month in May. The screenings took place in the dermatology departments of The Mount Sinai Hospital, Mount Sinai Beth Israel, Mount Sinai Roosevelt, and, for the first time, at Mount Sinai St. Luke’s. At The Mount Sinai Hospital, 97 people were examined; 81 at Mount Sinai Beth Israel; 77 at Mount Sinai Roosevelt; and 22 at Mount Sinai St. Luke’s.

The Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF) and Sundar Jagannath, MD, Director, Multiple Myeloma Program, The Tisch Cancer Institute, Mount Sinai Health System, teamed up recently to host a free patient education symposium at the Sheraton New York. Dr. Jagannath is a renowned researcher and clinician in the treatment of multiple myeloma, a relatively rare cancer of the bone marrow that results from abnormal growth of plasma cells. The MMRF, based in Norwalk, Connecticut, is the world’s No. 1 private funder of multiple myeloma research. The 200 attendees learned about managing the disease and today’s most promising treatment options from leading Mount Sinai clinicians. Participants included Ajai Chari, MD, Director of Clinical Research, Multiple Myeloma Program; and Hearn Jay Cho, MD, Assistant Professor of Medicine (Hematology and Medical Oncology), and Bethann Scarborough, MD, Assistant Professor of Medicine (Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine), at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Mount Sinai’s Multiple Myeloma Program is the largest of its kind in New York City.

The Department of Graduate Medical Education at Mount Sinai Beth Israel held its 13th Annual Resident and Fellow Research Fair on Thursday, May 7. Judges reviewed 100 abstracts covering a wide range of topics and selected three that will receive a prize at the hospital’s graduation ceremony on Wednesday, June 10. Additionally, 10 semifinalists will represent Mount Sinai Beth Israel at the Sixth Annual Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Consortium for Graduate Medical Education Resident and Fellow Research Day on Friday, June 5. DiversityInc, the nation’s leading publication in advancing excellence in diversity management, has ranked the Mount Sinai Health System No. 5 on its 2015 “Top 5 Hospitals and Health Systems” list. The recognition honors the accomplishments of the Health System’s Office for Diversity and Inclusion and the Center for Multicultural and Community Affairs, the diversity center of Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.
Even after a 31 percent increase in competition this year and the use of more competitive methodology, the Health System was able to improve from its No. 6 ranking in 2014. “Our goal was to move up on the list, and we accomplished that this year,” says Gary Butts, MD, Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer, Mount Sinai Health System, and Senior Associate Dean for Diversity Programs, Policy and Community Affairs, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. “This recognition acknowledges the sustained commitment of our leadership to advancing diversity and inclusion.” (more…)

A distinguished bioethicist and oncologist; a pioneer in the creation and development of integrated, patient-centered health care software; a Nobel Prize-winning neurologist; and an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court were honored at the 46th annual Commencement of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, held Friday, May 8, at Avery Fisher Hall, Lincoln Center.
