The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and National Jewish Health, the nation’s leading respiratory hospital, based in Denver, Colorado, have created a partnership to advance patient care and research in respiratory and related diseases. The Mount Sinai–National Jewish Health Respiratory Institute is expected to open on the Icahn School of Medicine campus in July.
“We are very excited to join with National Jewish Health in this endeavor,” said Dennis S. Charney, MD, Anne and Joel Ehrenkranz Dean, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and President for Academic Affairs, Mount Sinai Health System. “This agreement brings together two of the country’s finest medical institutions in a partnership to advance respiratory care, not only in New York City but throughout the country, with a focus on disease management, education, and research.” Dr. Charney made the remarks at a signing ceremony held at Mount Sinai on Friday, December 13.
Also participating in the ceremony was Michael Salem, MD, President and Chief Executive Officer of National Jewish Health. “We have a long history of patients traveling to Denver from around the country, seeking the expertise and unique approach to respiratory care that we provide,” said Dr. Salem. “Teaming up with a visionary health care organization creates a collaborative environment that extends our ability to share our expertise and innovations for the benefit of many more patients.”
The Respiratory Institute will develop protocols for patient care, specific to the Mount Sinai Health System, with an emphasis on providing an exceptional patient care experience, for which National Jewish Health is world-renowned. The partnership will also focus on innovative research opportunities, bringing together top investigators and extending the reach of each institution’s teaching programs.
It will also build upon the clinical and research endeavors of Mount Sinai’s Catherine and Henry J. Gaisman Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, which has experienced dramatic growth in the last several years, especially in its world-class sarcoidosis and lung cancer programs, under the leadership of Charles A. Powell, MD. Dr. Powell, Division Chief and the Janice and Coleman Rabin Professor of Pulmonary Medicine, has been named Chief Executive Officer of the Institute.
“Respiratory disease has reached epidemic proportions in New York City and around the nation, especially in asthma and asthma-related illnesses,” said Dr. Powell. “This partnership allows us to move one step closer in meeting the needs of our patients.”
