Every day, you are exposed to chemicals in the products you use for cleaning, garden care and even personal hygiene. Ever wonder about the safety of these chemicals?
What Does an MSDS Do?
Every chemical we use has an MSDS sheet associated with it. MSDS stands for Material Safety Data Sheet. An MSDS guides you on the safe uses of a product. If a product requires use of gloves, the MSDS will explain what gloves to wear and why. This is important because if a chemical might cause severe skin reactions, you want to prevent yourself from being exposed to it. The MSDS will also explain in detail what to do in case you are exposed to a chemical. It also tells you what chemicals to avoid using together, such as ammonia and bleach, which, when combined, can cause the user to feel dizzy and possibly pass out.
How to Access an MSDS
Pick any product you have at home and look on the label for the information that contains items such as Active Ingredient, Uses, Warnings or Directions. There should be a telephone number and website listed on that label, which you can use to request your MSDS for that product. You can ask for a paper copy delivered to you or you can look for it through the manufacturer’s website where, if needed, it will be emailed to you.
As you can see an MSDS can be a very valuable tool. These sheets are full of important information and can prevent injuries and death when used correctly.
