People with diabetes can enjoy eating at most restaurants while still successfully managing their condition. It’s all about making smart choices when dining out. Here are some tips to help you choose wisely:
Fast Food
We don’t encourage our patients to eat fast food and fried food, but if you do end up in a fast-food joint while traveling, it’s best to opt for grilled chicken instead of fried chicken, and a salad instead of fries or mashed potatoes.
The Plate Method
We teach our patients to follow the Plate Method when eating at home, as well as when dining out:
• ½ of the plate should contain non-starchy vegetables
• ¼ of the plate should have lean protein
• ¼ of the plate should have carbohydrates
Smart Ordering
Given how diverse New York City is, there are all different types of ethnic restaurants to enjoy. When you eat at any of them, it’s important to follow the plate method and be careful of portion sizes. The food from restaurants tends to be higher in sugar, fat and salt, so here are some additional suggestions for making healthier choices while dining out:
• Split an entree with someone else
• Avoid appetizers
• Skip dessert
• Opt for baked, grilled or broiled—not fried
• Instead of ordering pasta, get grilled chicken or fish and lots of vegetables
• If you are having salad, order the dressing on the side
Dessert for Special Occasions
If it’s a special occasion, you might want something sweet. Try splitting the dessert with someone else, or just have a few bites of it to please the palate. And, if you’re going to have some dessert, skip the bread beforehand.
