Mount Sinai Queens Groundbreaking
Hospital and community leaders, local legislators, and residents of Western Queens gathered on Monday, October 21, to break ground on a $125 million expansion project at Mount Sinai Queens, which will enhance emergency and outpatient care, and diagnostic and laboratory services, when it is completed in 2016.
Mount Sinai Queens—covering a diverse population of nearly 400,000 people in Astoria, Sunnyside, Long Island City, and surrounding neighborhoods—is one of seven hospital campuses in the Mount Sinai Health System.
Among the many improvements planned is a state-of-the-art expansion of the Emergency Department, to be named in recognition of a gift from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation.
21st Annual Celebration of Life Gala
The Mount Sinai Breast Health Resource Program (BHRP) held its 21st Annual Celebration of Life Gala on Thursday, October 10, at The Pierre in New York City, drawing more than 300 supporters and raising more than $300,000 to help breast cancer patients.
This year’s event honored fashion designer and breast cancer survivor Betsey Johnson, who spoke about the important role her friends and family played in helping her overcome the disease. NBC4 Reporter and Anchor Pat Battle spoke about her fight with breast cancer, as well.
The BHRP provides breast cancer patients with services that support their emotional and practical needs through diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship. All services are free of charge.
New York Eye and Ear Infirmary’s Thanks for Giving Gala
More than 450 guests attended New York Eye and Ear (NYEE) Infirmary’s annual Thanks for Giving Gala on Thursday, October 3, which celebrated 193 years of medical excellence, and honored two renowned physicians, J. Robert Rosenthal, MD, and Min-Ho Huang, MD, PhD, MPH. The gala raised nearly $325,000 for NYEE’s Physician Training and Education Programs.
J. Robert Rosenthal, MD, NYEE Senior Vice President for Medical Affairs and Chief Medical Officer, received the John Kearney Rodgers Physician of the Year Award for his 55 years of service to NYEE and the field of ophthalmology.
Min-Ho Huang, MD, PhD, MPH, founder and President of the Show Chwan Health Care System in Taiwan, received the Margaret Loeb Kempner Humanitarian Award for support of medical education and leadership training, translation of scientific advances to clinical care, and health care relief during natural disasters. Dr. Rosenthal has been instrumental in establishing an educational and clinical partnership between NYEE and the Show Chwan System.
