Fifteen high school, college, and graduate students who aspire to careers in the field of health care, participated this summer in internships throughout the Mount Sinai Health System, in areas such as medical records, managed care, ambulatory care, scientific research, and real estate services.
On July 29, 2014, Thomson Reuters awarded an Impact Factor of 5.486 to the open access journal Molecular Autism. This represents the highest Impact Factor for any journal dedicated to autism or related neurodevelopmental conditions.
The journal was created in 2010, by Professor Joseph Buxbaum, Director of the Seaver Autism Center and Professor of Psychiatry, Neuroscience, and Genetics and Genomic Sciences at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and Professor Simon Baron-Cohen, Director of the Autism Research Centre at the University of Cambridge. The goal of the journal was to provide an outlet for the volume of exciting genetic and other molecular autism research papers, and to make this cutting-edge autism research available freely via open access. In the past four years, Molecular Autism has grown and now publishes approximately five articles per month.
Faculty from throughout the Mount Sinai Health System joined residents, and medical and graduate students, at a recent social event sponsored by Friends of Odysseus, a black male mentoring program established in 2012 at the behest of Mount Sinai leadership to assist with the recruitment, retention, and promotion of black and Hispanic males in the sciences and medicine.
Peter Palese, PhD, a world-renowned microbiologist who has led seminal studies that continue to greatly expand the understanding of influenza viruses, was recently named a member of the 2014 class of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. The organization is one of the nation’s most acclaimed honorary societies and a leading center for independent policy research. It includes among its current members more than 250 Nobel Laureates across disciplines and more than 60 Pulitzer Prize winners.
The United States Permanent Representative to the United Nations; a Nobel Laureate; a pioneering cancer researcher and champion of women scientists; and a leading physician and medical journalist were among those honored at the 45th annual Commencement of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, held Friday, May 9, at Avery Fisher Hall.
The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai is launching a unique Master’s program specifically geared to give health care leaders new knowledge and skills as they confront the challenges of delivering patient care in an era of unprecedented reform. The Master’s Program in Health Care Delivery Leadership is offered through the Department of Population Science and Policy and is currently accepting applications for its inaugural cohort that begins this fall.
