Recognizing Our Colleagues: Ruth Kernizan, Mount Sinai Queens

Ruth Kernizan

Yvette Geier, RN, who works on 3 East at Mount Sinai Queens recently nominated Ruth Kernizan, Nursing Assistant, 3 West, for a STAR award.

“Ruth is very attentive with her patients. She takes vital signs on time and is very diligent. She will make sure the room and bedside tables are cleaned before she leaves. Her efforts do not go unnoticed. We praise her for her contributions and we celebrate her commitment. Bravo, Ruth!”

Ruth’s supervisor, Anne Pisciotta, RN, Clinical Nurse Manager, agrees.

“Ruth is an excellent Nursing Assistant. She often goes above and beyond to ensure patients are not only well cared for but focuses on a positive patient experience. MSQ is very fortunate to have her as a part of the team.”

Recognizing Our Colleagues: Kym Griebel at the Mount Sinai Network Patient Support Center

Kym Griebel

Kym Griebel has been with Mount Sinai for close to 15 years and has been with the Mount Sinai Network Patient Support Center in Huntington, Long Island, for three of them. She is exceptional when it comes to our patients, always remaining calm and positive, and she truly goes above and beyond for them in any way she can. Kym was assigned a new project recently where she has been conducting outreach to our current patients with a high A1C in order to try to schedule them with one of our diabetic educators. This couldn’t be a more perfect project for Kym, as she is a health and wellness advocate herself. She has had tremendous success so far, and has been so kind and comforting to all the patients she is interacting with. Some have even called her back to thank her for making the appointment for them because they felt so great afterward. We are so happy to have Kym on our team and are excited to see her continued progress with this venture.”

Recognizing Our Colleagues: Donjeta Tominaj, Mount Sinai West

Donjeta Tominaj

Donjeta Tominaj has worked at the Mount Sinai Health System since 2015. Since then, she has taken on multiple roles and currently works as a manager in our Admitting Department at Mount Sinai West. She is a great team player and was very instrumental at helping convert our VIP unit to one for COVID-19 patients, repurposing our conference rooms and leading the team in other key areas during the surges of the pandemic. Thank you for everything you do, Donjeta. Your teamwork and agility have truly made a difference!”

Recognizing Our Colleagues: Basil Brooks and Joseph Frimpong, Mount Sinai Morningside

Basil Brooks, left, and Joseph Frimpong

“I just wanted to give a shout out for the two charming men who are assigned to our area at Mount Sinai Morningside for housekeeping—Basil Brooks and Joseph Frimpong. What a difference it has been around here at ACC/Clark 10. Basil and Joseph go above and beyond to assure the whole area is clean and swept, and bathroom floors washed, and all the rest. They are courteous, cordial, and professional.  I also often see them assisting patients who have questions down on the second floor, where they also work.”

Alicia Thomas, MSPT, MPH, Director of Rehabilitation, Mount Sinai Morningside

Recognizing Our Colleagues: Bonnie Boyce, MSN, MPH, Mount Sinai Queens

“Right at the start of her shift at Mount Sinai Queens 2 East, nurse Bonnie Boyce, MSN, MPH, noticed that a patient, who was not her own, looked unwell. When she took the patient’s pulse, she did not find one and immediately called a code. Advanced cardiac life support brought the patient back, and the family was so grateful. Later, Bonnie alerted me to a patient with elevated serum glucose and low bicarbonate levels, with elevated lactate. The patient was in the Emergency Department at the time, but had just been admitted with a bed assignment on 2 East. I immediately reviewed the chart, and we upgraded the patient to the ICU for diabetic ketoacidosis to start on an insulin drip. Both patients received better care because of Bonnie’s excellent clinical judgment. She is the true definition of a team player. She shows great empathy to her patients and their family members.”

Tenzin Noryang, PA, Physician Associate Supervisor, Mount Sinai Queens

Recognizing Our Colleagues: Vrashank Dave, PT, Mount Sinai Morningside

“On his way to work recently, Vrashank Dave, PT, Mount Sinai Morningside, helped a sick subway passenger who experienced chest pain and called 911. Vrashank helped the passenger prevent a fall and helped EMTs transfer him to a stretcher. Vrashank demonstrated quick thinking and genuine concern to care for a person in need, even out of the workplace. Thank you, Vrashank. Your agility and empathy make us proud!”
