Competitive Swimmer Is Grateful for New Teammates at Mount Sinai Beth Israel

Patient Capri Djatiasmoro with Mary Lakaszawski, RN, MSN, and Sanghyun Kim, MD.

Capri Djatiasmoro, 68, is an elite swimmer who has completed the Manhattan Island Marathon Swim and swims year round with the Coney Island Polar Bear and Coney Island Brighton Beach Open Water Swimmers.

She is known for being mentally and physically tough, but nothing prepared her for the challenges of a gastrointestinal emergency that landed her in the Emergency Department at Mount Sinai Beth Israel (MSBI) and led to six surgeries over the last year.

“The team at Mount Sinai saved my life,” says Capri. She praised the “incredible” care provided by her surgeon, Sanghyun Kim, MD, and ostomy nurse, Mary Lakaszawski, RN, MSN, who practices at Mount Sinai Doctors Faculty Practice on East 98th Street but was called upon by Dr. Kim to treat Capri.

“Dr. Kim always gave me his full attention, answered all my questions, and kept me thoroughly informed,” Capri says. “Mary is simply golden. I needed to have an ostomy bag, and she was determined to fit me correctly and comfortably, no matter how long it took. She was so caring and made me feel like a full partner in the process. The entire team on 10 Silver made me feel like family.”

According to these providers, partnerships with patients are key to recovery. Ms. Lakaszawski told Capri, “We will get through this together, you are stuck with me. It’s a bit of a joke, but true.”

Dr. Kim, Chief of Colorectal Surgery at MSBI and Mount Sinai Union Square, credits Capri. “Her strength of character allowed her to fight through her surgeries and win.” And Capri is aiming to do just that—she is now training for two competitions.

Our Epic Journey & Champions by Dr. Jeremy Boal

We’ve made a lot of progress since we became a system in 2013. One of the areas we are focusing on is creating a seamless experience for all of our patients across the entire Mount Sinai Health System. As a part of that goal, we are finally implementing Epic Inpatient at Petrie next year. Using Epic as our common EHR, we will have the tools and information we need to make more informed decisions, leading to better patient care outcomes and contributing to an improved experience for our patients across our entire network.

We are making excellent progress across MSBI as we prepare ourselves for the Epic inpatient go-live on Sunday, May 17, 2020.

Meet Our MSBI Epic Inpatient Project Champions

One of the many benefits of working at our health system is that we already have the support we need as we learn how to move from our current inpatient technology to Epic. To that end, we are delighted to introduce you to our Project Champions for the Epic Inpatient Implementation at Mount Sinai Beth Israel. They have graciously offered their time, caring, and enthusiasm to help us prepare for the move to Epic. Preparations have included: providing subject matter expertise, partnering with teams that help ensure that the system is responsive to the needs of the end-users (all of us), and representing us when key decisions needed to be made. You can ask them questions about this implementation or make suggestions so we can better understand your needs as they relate to training and learning the new software and understanding your workflows. Our Project Champions for the Epic Inpatient Implementation at MSBI are:

  • Diana Raymond, MSN, RN, our MSBI Nursing Champion
  • Andrew Yu, MD, our MSBI Physician Champion

I hope you’ll seek these champions out for the opportunity to collaborate as we all learn how to maximize Epic in an effort to provide seamless, compassionate care.

MSBI Epic Inpatient Intranet Site

To provide a central source of information about our Epic Inpatient project, we also have launched the MSBI Epic Inpatient intranet site (http://mshsintranet.mountsinai.org/EpicInpatientMSBI/), where employees can find great resources to learn about our transformative journey.  We will be updating this site with information about training and helpful tips (NOTE: use Chrome for better browsing experience and site will only work when connected to the MSHS network).

Thank you all for being a part of this journey to create a seamless experience for our patients.

Our Parkinson’s Foundation Center of Excellence

At Mount Sinai – Union Square, we have one of the longest-established Parkinson’s Foundation Centers of Excellence. We are a part of an international program of 48 designated medical centers (34 in the US) meeting rigorous clinical, research, education and patient care criteria. Established in 1996, this program has continuously provided multidisciplinary care for people with Parkinson’s disease and related disorders seeking expert diagnosis and treatment.

Our Center of Excellence is a key component of the Mount Sinai Health System’s Movement Disorders Program, recognized internationally for its quality of care and cutting edge research.  The team treats patients with various movement disorders that include, in addition to Parkinson’s, dystonia, tremor, and tic disorders, myoclonus, ataxia, Huntington disease, and others. They provide compassionate individualized care built on trusting relationships with the patients and their family members. Susan Bressman, MD, is the Director of Movement Disorders for the System and directs its Parkinson’s Center of Excellence. Last year, Crain’s Health honored her for incredible work in this area.

Vicki Shanker, MD, commented on the environment that Dr. Bressman creates for patients and employees alike:

“Dr. Bressman sets the example for the patient-physician relationship. I see patients and family members embracing her on their way out like family members. Our entire team strives to be there in every way possible for our patients and each other throughout their journey.”

The team consists of attending physicians, neurology residents and fellows, nurses, nurse practitioners, researchers, genetic counselors, and many others. Each year, they must re-apply to be certified as a Center of Excellence, and the each year the process becomes more rigorous.

This team also receives funding for research from the National Institute for Health, Michael J. Fox Foundations, New York State Department of Health and Parkinson Study Group, as well as industry sponsored trials seeking better therapies and ultimately curative treatments.

I’m so proud to have such an incredible and innovative team in our Downtown network.

Happy Holidays from Dr. Jeremy Boal

I want to thank you all for taking the extra time to brighten up our facilities for our patients during the holidays. This week we have been rounding to wish everyone happy holidays, and I heard so many stories about the teamwork and dedication it took to deck the halls in addition to everything you do daily for our patients.

You can see more photos of our departments decorated by clicking the button below.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve seen so many wonderful gatherings of our MSBI family. I enjoyed seeing all of the gingerbread houses our New York Eye and Ear colleagues created, and I’m thankful to our colleagues at Mount Sinai Doctors 34th Street for collecting almost 400 pounds of non-perishable food for those who need it.

I hope you get to spend joyful time with your colleagues, friends, and families this season.

Honoring Excellence in Communication with Patients

Honorees were joined by Mount Sinai Trustee Susan R. Cullman, second row, far left; Vicki LoPachin, MD, second row, far right, and other members of Mount Sinai Health System leadership.

For the past four years, the Cullman Family Award for Excellence in Physician Communication has honored Mount Sinai Health System physicians and advanced practice providers who demonstrate exceptional communication in clinical practice. Recipients of this year’s award were ranked in the top 1 percent nationally in provider communication for 2018 as measured by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ Clinician and Group Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems patient experience survey.

In a ceremony on Tuesday, October 15, at the Corporate Services Center, 51 awardees were recognized for their outstanding achievements. Nineteen were previous recipients.

The presentations were made by Vicki LoPachin, MD, Chief Medical Officer and Senior Vice President of the Mount Sinai Health System; along with David L. Reich, MD, President of The Mount Sinai Hospital and Mount Sinai Queens; Burton P. Drayer, MD, Chief Executive Officer of the Mount Sinai Doctors Faculty Practice; and Mount Sinai Trustee Susan R. Cullman. “Thank you for putting our patients at the center of everything you do,” Dr. LoPachin said. “You truly exemplify the values and the mission of Mount Sinai.”
