The Mount Sinai Medical Center recently celebrated the opening of the Steven and Alexandra Cohen Center for Labor and Birth, a state-of-the-art facility that will enable the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Science to accommodate its growing number of patients.

The 15,000-square-foot space, donated by the Steven A. and Alexandra M. Cohen Foundation, is located within the Jo Carole and Ronald S. Lauder Center for Maternity Care on the second floor of the Klingenstein Pavilion. The facility features a reception area, administrative offices, a private triage room, four private antepartum fetal surveillance rooms, three short-term triage bays, and 18 birthing rooms.

“The décor is beautiful, soft, and inviting, and the state-of-the-art equipment will make the patients’ experiences much more pleasant and memorable,” says Raymond Sandler, MD, Director of Labor and Delivery in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Science. “The ability to have a designated triage room and three extra triage bays will allow for a more efficient and prompt evaluation of patients. Our overall goal is to deliver the best care to our patients, and the new facility goes a long way in achieving this.”

The opening of the Cohen Center also coincides with the 60th anniversary of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Science, which was officially recognized as a department in 1953. On average, the department delivers more than 560 babies each month.
