The Oxford-Mount Sinai Consortium on Bioethics convened April 11–13, 2016 at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS) for an exchange of research  on ethical issues in medicine and biomedical science. Celebrating its 25th anniversary, the Consortium—co-founded by Rosamond Rhodes, PhD; Stefan Baumrin, PhD, JD; and Daniel Moros, MD—is an interdisciplinary collaboration which focuses on faculty development. The annual meeting encourages its members to devote a portion of their research to bioethical topics and share their findings.

This year’s Consortium was divided into 10 sessions over the course of 3 days, and covered an array of subjects.  The presentations addressed  ethical dilemmas involving adolescent autonomy, clinical trials, refusal of treatment, ethics education, and transplant recipient selection. Each presentation was delivered by members of the Consortium’s participating institutions including the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai; The Graduate Center, CUNY; Oxford University; King’s College London; Vrije University of Amsterdam; and Bar Ilan University.

To commemorate the Consortium’s milestone year, faculty members were invited to a celebratory banquet held at the New York Athletic Club on Tuesday, April 12, at which 6 members were awarded honorary plaques for their commitment and contributions to the Consortium. Honorees were awarded for their role as Co-Founders (Dr. Rhodes, Dr. Baumrin, and Dr. Moros), their program support since its inception (Nathan Case, MD, Dean Emeritus and Karen Smalls) and their generous support throughout the years (Monika Conley, President  of the John Conley Foundation for Ethics and Philosophy in Medicine and wife of the late Dr. John J. Conley).

The annual meeting, which is open to all faculty members who have an interest in bioethics, has been a highpoint  of every academic year. As Dr. Rhodes says, “We look forward to seeing old friends and learning about their most recent projects. What I learn always enriches my own work.” Plans for the 2017 Oxford-Mount Sinai Consortium on Bioethics are already underway and will be held at Oxford University during the first week of April.
