A Message From Dr. Jeremy Boal: Dedicated Addiction Care

I’m really impressed with the great work happening in our addiction treatment programs on floors 3, 5, and 6 of the Bernstein Pavilion. The staff provides excellent care to patients and an invaluable service to our community.

(Scroll down to see the photographs!)

In the past several months I’ve spent a lot of time rounding on 3B, 5B, and 6B, and hearing from staff about what they need to take care of their patients. We are adding PA positions, recruiting nurses, and purchasing much-needed equipment that the staff has requested.

Over the next two years, each of the behavioral health and chemical dependency inpatient units in Bernstein will get cosmetic makeovers, and those will eventually be followed by full-scale renovations.  This is part of the long-term plan to transform Bernstein into the flagship hospital for behavioral health for the Mount Sinai Health System and the entire region.

The detox unit on 5B is often the important first step for patients. Our detox team helps patients address their physical addiction and stabilize them for the next step of treatment.

On 3B, patients can continue their inpatient care with our rehab team, providing them with a healthy foundation for long-term addiction management.

Day staff from 3B: (front row) Resurrecction Amparo, RN; Svetlana Mulkaidarova, RN; Shelley Burrowes, RN; Tangi Robinson, PCA; Althea Reid, PCA; Julia Alishayev, PA; Rose Washington, USA; (back row) Michael Fiori, MD, Director Addictions MSBI, Douglas Garn, Counselor, Wil Diaz Counselor, Rupert Shaw; Miriam Fridman, RN, NM.

Our outpatient department on 6B is growing. Patients in this program receive structured care aimed at long-term addiction management.

A Message From Dr. Jeremy Boal: Our Extraordinary Emergency Department

There is so much great work happening in the Emergency Department. I want to be sure everybody knows about it.

Our ED has exceptionally low “door to doctor” times—which means that patients get treated faster.  In addition, and in part due to this exceptional performance, the ED recently received the prestigious Gold Plus Elite Award for meeting all timing and care guidelines recommended for stroke patients by the American Heart Association.  We are the only hospital in the system to earn this award.

Earlier this year, we opened the new Pediatric Short Stay Unit.  It’s the only observation unit designed specifically for children in the New York City area. We can now admit and observe children with minor and less complicated illnesses while advancing them toward discharge within 48 hours. This has allowed about 75% of children requiring admission to remain close to home and in our community, easing the burden on their families. Treatment in the Pediatric ED and the Short Stay Unit is family-centered and provided by a cooperative, multidisciplinary team, some of whom are seen below:  (from left to right) Karen Campanella, RN, Anne Espina, RN, Kena Johnson, PCA, Michelle Gaba, MD, and Marcia Graham, Child Life Specialist.

I’d also like to welcome Anthoney Lim, MD, who in January started as the Medical Director of the Pediatric ED. Dr. Lim and Joseph Wolf, MD, recently arranged a tour to educate kindergarten students and parents from PS 33/Chelsea Prep on emergency services. The kids toured an ambulance and participated in teddy bear clinic. This was an outstanding opportunity for the staff to connect with and promote healthy habits in the community. Pictured below, during the kids’ visit, are: Dr. Lim (right) with Catherine Coughlin, Director of Nursing (center), and Gina McManus, Nurse Manager of Pediatrics (left).

I’m also excited to report that the ED created a new residency program for Registered Nurses who wish to gain emergency care experience. It’s an innovative one-year program that provides nurses with intensive mentoring and training in emergency room care. Pictured below are Tracylain Evans, Director of Education for the ED throughout MSHS (back), with the five residents (from left to right): Abdelhamid Jnane, Alexa Malm, Melissa Delaunay, Jennel Morgan, Ronna Cea, and Vandy Perez.

I am so proud of the great care our Emergency Department provides to the community.  We will be here providing that exceptional care all the way through until our new hospital opens in mid-2021. At that point, we, and our amazing staff and doctors will officially move into our brand new emergency department at the new hospital.

Have a great weekend.

A Message from Dr. Jeremy Boal: The Ambulatory Practices Are Growing!

This week, I’d like to highlight some of the growth and great care being provided to patients in our ambulatory practices.  There is so much going on!   Be sure to scroll all the way down to see the pictures of your co-workers.

Downtown Chelsea is offering expanded ultrasound services. I’m really excited to announce that this week Mount Sinai Downtown Chelsea Center expanded its ultrasonography service.  The staff now performs abdominal, gynecological, first trimester OB, and vascular ultrasound.  Pictured below (from left to right) are members of the ultrasound team: Jodi Russo, Mary Ibrahim, Patrique Larco-Russo, and Julissa Gomez. Chelsea is also building eight new exam rooms, which should be ready in September.

Greenwich Street opens for business. I’m also pleased to report that the Medical Group’s Greenwich Street practice opened its doors in early March. It’s located near Battery Park and City Hall, one of the fastest growing residential neighborhoods in Manhattan.  The practice currently offers primary care, dermatology and cardiology services, and will be recruiting specialty care physicians in orthopedics and gynecology.   Pictured below (from left to right) are three members of the new practice: Medical Assisant Clara Apastolopoulos, Dr. Maria Sequeira, and Medical Assistant Angela Grissett.  We are so excited to open this practice and expand into this growing neighborhood!

14th Street Practice offers allergy care.  The Medical Group’s practice at 14th Street is now offering allergy care. Allergist Dr. Sarah Silverman started treating patients at the practice in March, and her practice is taking off! LPN Janice Amador (center) and Dr. Silverman (right) are pictured below, caring for one of their patients.

MSDUS practices get recognized. Each year the Mount Sinai Health System participates in HealthFirst’s Quality Incentive Program.  It rewards practices financially that deliver excellent clinical care, provide preventive cancer screenings, and effectively manage chronic illnesses. MSBI was – once again — a top performer in the program, and had the best overall clinical scores in the Mount Sinai Health System. These results are largely due to the hard work of our colleagues at Union Square – the Care Managers, and the staff working in GMA, Pediatrics, Gastroenterology, Radiology, and Ob/Gyn. What an amazing job by an amazing team! Pictured below are some of the people who helped: (back row left to right) Nurse Care Manager Charmaine Alexis; Patient Navigators Yuyuhita Guzman, Danielle Arroyo, and Xiomara Reyes; Billing Coordinator Merlyn Nesbitt; and Care Coordinators Michael Ortiz and Tyler McGuire; (front row, from left to right) Senior Data Analyst Christine Einloth and PSR Kathryn Gariba Benjamin.

Thank you and have a great weekend!

A Message from Dr. Jeremy Boal: New Friends, Old Friends

It’s been another great week. The theme for the week can be friendship, as captured in the pictures below.

First, we opened a new surgical step down unit on 1 Silver. The unit looks great and it is already busy. Here is some of the staff.

Second, at the conclusion of Social Work month. I had the chance to meet many social workers at their luncheon and celebrate their important contribution across all of our programs.

Social Worker Brooke Schiowitz (third from the right) with her colleagues in 7 Silver/Ortho.

Third, we welcome a new friend, Dr. Margie Brandwein, our new Chair of Pathology. We didn’t get a picture of her this week, but we will correct that!

And last, we celebrated the friendship and leadership of Dr. Edward Conway and Dr. Samuel Acquah, both of whom are leaving MSBI after long and distinguished careers. We love them both, and we will miss them dearly.

A Message from Dr. Jeremy Boal: Amazing Grace

This week felt like a whirlwind.  There are so many things I’m grateful for.  I’d like to share several of them with you.

  • We made it through the snow storm with grace and humor.  So many of you put in the extra effort to come into work and care for our patients.  Thank you.
  • We achieved what must be a record number of discharges in a single day; another example of how hard everyone is working.
  • On Thursday, the entire staff showed amazing grace and composure treating an NYPD officer who passed away, and then caring for the officer’s extended family and colleagues.  As one employee stated, after making accommodations for dozens of other officers who arrived at the Hospital to be with their comrade, “we care for people; this is what we do.” Perfect, and humbling, and something I will share with my family and friends this weekend.

Please enjoy your weekend. I look forward to seeing you on Monday.
