A Message from Dr. Jeremy Boal: Who Doesn’t Love a Snow Day?

Today, hundreds of MSBI employees in the hospital and the ambulatory practices got up early to make sure our patients received great care.  For example,  Rania Mohamed, a Radiation Oncology Therapist at MSDUS, left her home at 3 AM in order to be on time for the first patient of the day!  Amazing.  Many of you stayed overnight in the city with family and friends.  And some of you slept in the hospital.

In the pictures below, I’d like you to meet some of your colleagues who are working today, despite the best efforts of Winter Storm Stella to make the morning commute impossible.  These employees work all across MSBI Downtown – at Union Square, Chelsea Cancer Center, 34th Street, and 23rd Street.  We also have pictures from the ED, Core Lab, Periop, and Food Services.  Your co-workers in the Food Services Department worked very hard to provide breakfast and lunch to the inpatient staff.  (Be sure to scroll all the way down to see all of the photos.)

I want to thank each and every employee who made special arrangements today to come to work, or to work an extra shift.  I really appreciate it, and I know our patients are grateful too.  I’m really proud to be a part of the MSBI Downtown community.

A Message From Dr. Jeremy Boal: What a Week This Has Been!

I wanted to take a moment to recognize that this has been a tremendous week.

  • The hospital was full and the ambulatory practices were very busy.

  • We opened a new unit for electroconvulsive therapy, located in the main hospital on 6 Dazian/Silver.   This unit, relocated from MSSL, represents our long term commitment to expanding behavioral health at MSBI.

  • All of you continue to do amazing work at reducing the incidence of hospital infections.  In a recent test, the EVS staff received a perfect grade in keeping surfaces clean.  Outstanding!

  • And on Friday, we recognized ten of our colleagues who were selected by their peers to receive the 2017 Heart Awards.  It was an amazing ceremony in which we celebrated our history and our commitment to each other.  In the next several weeks, I will be sharing some of the pictures from the ceremony and stories about the Heart Award winners.

A Message from Dr. Jeremy Boal: National Caregivers Day

Today is National Caregivers Day, dedicated to those who provide hospice and long term care.

On this day, I’d like to recognize our amazingly talented and thoughtful staff on 4 Karpas! Under sometimes difficult and draining circumstances, you provide compassionate care with a personal touch to patients and their family members.

As some of you may know, on December 23, 2016, the 4 Karpas staff helped arrange a wedding ceremony on the unit for a couple who had been together for ten years and wanted to get married before the patient went home. What an inspiring story!

And because everyone at MSBI is a caregiver, I want to take this moment to recognize each and every one of you for your hard work and dedication. It’s an honor to work with you and for you.

Thank you!

Jeremy Boal

President of MSBI

New Post from Dr. Jeremy Boal, President of Mount Sinai Downtown

Good morning,

First let me start by wishing you and the entire Mount Sinai Beth Israel community a very happy new year. As of January 1st, I officially started as the new president of Mount Sinai Beth Israel Hospital. I look forward to continuing to meet with and introduce myself to you in the coming weeks and months. As we look forward, here is some history I only recently learned but that is highly relevant to our future.

The Beth Israel Hospital was founded in 1889 by a group of Orthodox Jews on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. They each contributed 25 cents to start the hospital. It first opened as an ambulatory dispensary and then, in 1891, the original 20-bed hospital officially opened for business. In 1902 it moved into an expanded 115-bed facility. It moved again in 1929 to its current location.

Throughout all those years, wherever it was located, whatever its size, the hospital has served the community with excellence, compassion, and humility. It is in this same spirit that we embark on our transformation plan so the hospital can provide needed care for another 100 plus years.

Over the next four years we will be building a brand new Mount Sinai Beth Israel Hospital only a few blocks from our current location. We will be upgrading and modernizing our current Bernstein Pavilion into the region’s behavioral health flagship. We will be upgrading and expanding our ambulatory services footprint at Union Square, Chelsea and beyond. And we will be investing in the development of a host of innovative programs and services to be able to provide care in the home.

I am both honored to serve this hospital and the Mount Sinai Health System and even more honored to have the opportunity to partner with the incredible employees and doctors who are the heart and soul of Mount Sinai Beth Israel. Together we will build an extraordinary future.
Jeremy Boal, M.D.

Giving Thanks at MSBI

On Tuesday, November 22nd, MSBI staff gathered for our hospital’s annual Day of Thanks. This longstanding tradition brings together staff from across the hospital to take a moment to stop and be grateful. The Louis Armstrong Music Therapy Department serenaded us, Chaplain Michael Horton offered words of gratitude and Macarthur Caesar, a carpenter with the Engineering Department, sang “Amazing Grace” with his beautiful voice.

Thank you to Rabbi Jo Hirschmann, Director of Spiritual Care, for hosting the event and inviting all to share stories of gratitude and caring. Thank you to Food Services for the contribution of pies, raffled off to those who joined in the special day, and for their efforts in preparing a holiday meal on Thanksgiving Day.

While it is difficult to be away from family and friends on holidays, I appreciate everyone who dedicated their time to be at MSBI on Thanksgiving Day, both those who were here for a work shift and those who volunteered to help with the Thanksgiving meal that was served in the 2 Dazian Rotunda. Over 850 employees were thanked and served.

President’s Update

As previously announced, MSBI will be transitioning our pediatrics unit and pediatrics ICU to a pediatric short-stay unit early next year. Currently, less than one child a day is being cared for in MSBI’s PICU and less than 4 children a day are in our general pediatrics unit. A majority of these general pediatrics patients are often in our hospital for less than two days so they would continue to be treated in our short-stay unit. Patients requiring highly complex care, including intensive care, will be moved to the Kravis Children’s Hospital, the health system’s center of excellence for pediatrics. In our pediatric short-stay unit, children will be treated by pediatricians and pediatric nurses. Furthermore, both our current and future emergency departments will still care for pediatric patients, treating them for issues from severe asthma to broken bones.

I know our great team will continue to provide the best care to our young patients. Stay tuned for more updates!
