Adam Jacobs, MD, is Director for Complex Family Planning, Mount Sinai Health System, and is the Ryan Residency Family Planning Program Director for The Mount Sinai Hospital.
In addition to the significant work he is doing to grow and support this program and the valuable service it provides to patients, he recently lent his helping hand to someone in need in another, as notable, way.
On an early summer morning, a woman fainted and fell onto the subway tracks at the Union Square station. The trains were experiencing delays and long waits in sweltering conditions underground, due to a fire further along the same subway line.
Dr. Jacobs was the first bystander to witness the incident and jumped onto the tracks, followed by another bystander, to save her.
After they lifted the woman onto the platform, Dr. Jacobs determined she had not sustained any broken bones. He consulted with EMS and the police, and they determined she had suffered significant head trauma and multiple lacerations, so she was taken to a local hospital for further evaluation.
Initially unresponsive, the woman became alert after several minutes. Authorities used the woman’s cell phone to contact her daughter.
Having lived in New York City for 30 years, Dr. Jacobs says he has seen similar incidents of people in distress from time to time.
“Never did I imagine I would find myself jumping on the subway tracks to rescue someone,” he says. “I did not think twice about my response; I saw her fall, and it was pure instinct.”
